1. Gakunen-sei (Yearly advance) and Tani-sei (Credit-based)

Gakunen-sei (Yearly advance) takes the same school-year system as Junior High Schools. Students promote to a higher grade year by year as 1st grade, 2nd grade, then 3rd grade.
In Tani-sei (Credit-based), students earn credits (“Tan-i”) based on their learning hours in each subject.

2.Varieties of Courses

FUTSU-KA (regular course) Students mainly learn general academic subjects(KYO-TSU KYOKA) that make a foundation for knowledges and skills. Each school carries their original feature. While one school offers classes to prepare for entering universities, the other provides “RUI KEI” that teaches specialized academic field.

SENMON-GAKKA (specialist course) Aiming to become a specialist in a specific academic area, students learn specialized knowledges and skills (SENMON KYO-KA) at SENMON-GAKKA. The course has two major types.
In one case, students learn subjects more related to jobs such as agriculture, industry, business, fisheries, home economics, and welfare. In another case, students spend more time on learning specified field such as science and mathematics, arts, and international studies.
At schools with a agricultural course, industrial course, or business course, students may earn various licenses. These licenses are applicable only in Japan, but students will learn basic skills.

SOGO-GAKKA (general studies course) In SOGO-GAKKA, students themselves make a choice on which subjects to take according to their interests, abilities, aptitudes, and desired carriers from courses like general academic subjects(KYO-TSU KYOKA), agriculture, industry, business, or welfare in specialist course(SENMON-GAKKA).
