III. The Fees of Senior High School

Because public schools are managed by the prefecture or the city, the tuition is quite affordable for any family.
At private schools run by each educational foundation, the tuition varies differently. Please inform each school for details. There are also differences in the schedules and the systems of entrance exams between public and private schools.

*2 At Teiji-sei (part-time) or Tsushin-sei (correspondence) schools, students who work (including part-time) 90 days or more a year, depending on their family economic situation, are exempt from payments for texts.
*3 The price of texts and materials will vary depending on the classes.
*4 Other expenses include fees for the class-year, annual PTA, support-groups, student government, library, post-high school guidance, and enrichment fees.
These fees vary from school to school, so the figures quoted in the chart are averages. We are giving examples of costs to the best of our knowledge.
“Class-year fees” (gakunen-hi) includes payments for special activities of that year’s class, such as school trips, supplies, special outings etc.
‘Other expenses’ of a private senior high school is a payment regulated by the school regulation and does not include “Class-year fees” or “PTA fees”, which is not regulated by the school laws.
*5 At Teiji-sei (part-time) schools, students who work (including part-time) 90 days or more a year and depending on the family economic situation, are partially exempt from school lunch fees.

The families with the annual income under 9.1 million yen can receive the support. The government will cover all of the school tuition of public school, or a part of private school.
If you don’t apply, you will have to pay for the school tax by yourself.

1) Who can apply for the Support Fund
The families with the annual income under 9.1 million yen and students of high schools, post-junior high school curriculums, special education high schools, technical college (grades 1-3), or vocational high schools. But the funding does not apply to students who have exceeded 3 years of education (4 for part-time /
 correspondence schools). In the credit-based, Part-time and Correspondence course up to 74 credits are the subject of support.

2) How to apply
Have to hand in the next documents 1) Application form which school gives to you, 2) taxation certificate with amount of local income tax (“Shichouson-minzei shotoku-warigaku” and “Ken-minzei shotoku-warigaku”) of the parents, of the parents, can be get at the prefecture of your city. In the first year, you have to hand in those in April and July. (Since second year is only July)

4. Other Expenses

Saving for the School Trip The cost will be approximately ¥80,000 for domestic trip, ¥150,000 for overseas. You start saving for this during the first year, and the actual trip will be in the second or third year.
If the trip is overseas, you can choose whether to participate or not.

Club Activity Fees If you join a club, there will be some additional costs. For example: uniforms, musical instruments, club trips, etc.

Commuting Fees *6 If you use bus or train, you take a cost for transport. Buying a student transport pass for more than 1 month is much cheaper than buying a pass normally. Please ask at the office of a station.

*6 If a student is commuting from a certain distance or greater, and the transportation fee is more than ¥15,000 a month, the student may be given ENKYORI-TSUGAKU-HOJOKIN, a grant for students commuting from a longer distance. For details, please ask each school.
